The huacaya is the predominant race. It constitutes approximately 90% of the total alpaca population. Its wool is characterized by its curly fiber and its dense fleece.
The variety of colors offered is very rich, ranging from black to white
The suri is the least common alpaca. It represents approximately 7% to 10% of the species.
The fiber is the suri is the most valued due to its special characteristics.
Its fleece grows in long straight strands that almost reach the ground and its fiber practically lacks elastic memory.
The alpaca lives between 18 to 24 years and does not cease to produce wool until the end of its biological cycle. It is docile, intelligent, sweet, shy and curious all at the same time; it tends to behave in an organized manner and it follows routine by nature. Its soft hoofs do not erode the land and its way of grazing cuts the grass instead of uprooting it. Another peculiarity of the alpacas is that they all do their needs in the same place, which facilitates their hygiene and maintenance. The alpaca is a sociable animal; therefore it usually lives in groups and follows a hierarchy amongst them.
